U.S. turkey and egg exports for the first three quarters of this year increased in volume and value from the same period of last year, while broiler exports decreased according to new trade data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
While U.S. total broiler exports were down due largely to decreased shipments to China, other export markets such as Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Iraq, Angola, Ghana, Philippines, Qatar, Dominican Republic, Turkmenistan, Mauritania, and Gambia showed tremendous gains in broiler exports from the same period a year earlier.
Broiler exports for the first three quarters of this year were 2,441,412 metric tons, down 10.5 percent from the same period of last year, while export value was $3.44 billion, down 3.0 percent (Figure 1). Of the total export volume, 51.0 percent or 1,245,758 tons were shipped to the top six markets, including Mexico, Cuba, Taiwan, Philippines, China, and Canada.
Shipments to Mexico in January-September 2024 were 542,277 metric tons, up 1.2 percent from the same period a year earlier. During the same period, Brazilian chicken exports to Mexico reached 136,151 metric tons, up 8.2 percent year over year, while Chilean chicken exports to Mexico were 17,043 metric tons, down 14.1 percent.
Exports to China decreased by 64.6 percent to 119,477 tons (of which 76.5 percent or 91,424 metric tons were frozen chicken paws), while shipments to Cuba decreased by 10.3 percent to 187,497 tons. Exports to other important markets were Taiwan, 148,354 tons, down 31.4 percent; Philippines, 132,020, up 8.5 percent; Canada, 116,133 tons, up 4.9 percent; Guatemala, 101,452 tons, down 1.7 percent; Vietnam, 91,395 tons, up 16.2 percent; Angola, 88,022 tons, up 15.9 percent; Hong Kong, 67,617 tons, up 85.9 percent. Broiler exports in September 2024 were 270,668 metric tons, down 4.2 percent from the same month of last year, while export value reached $406.4 million, up 9.1 percent. Exports to China decreased by 65.7 percent to 10,974 tons (of which 50.8 percent or 5,570 metric tons were frozen chicken paws). Shipments to Mexico increased by 5.6 percent year over year to 60,095 metric tons, while shipments to Philippines increased by 16.3 percent to 21,501 tons. While exports to Cuba, Canada, Taiwan, Ghana, Georgia, Colombia, Angola, and Dominican Republic increased notably year over year, exports to Congo (Brazzaville), Haiti, South Africa, Qatar, Vietnam, Peru, El Salvador, and Costa Rica decreased significantly.
Cumulative turkey exports for the first nine months of this year were 164,124 metric tons, up 4.9 percent from the same period a year earlier, while export value reached $490.5 million, up 8.6 percent (Figure 2). Of the total quantity exported, 83.4 percent or 136,923 metric tons were exported to the top six markets, including Mexico, Canada, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and Peru, with Mexico alone accounting for 75.7 percent or 124,286 metric tons.
Turkey exports in September 2024 were 19,370 metric tons, down 14.6 percent from the same month of last year, while export value was $59.3 million, up 1.3 percent. Shipments to Mexico decreased by 0.3 percent to 14,022 metric tons, while exports to Panama decreased by 53.4 percent to 568 metric tons. While exports to Colombia, Angola, and Japan increased notably, shipments to Vietnam, Canada, Peru, Chile, Gabon, Trinidad and Tobago, Mozambique, UAE, South Africa, and Samoa decreased significantly.
Total egg exports (table eggs plus egg products in shell egg equivalent) for the first nine months of this year increased by 2.4 percent to 135.7 million dozen. The value of those exports decreased by 1.3 percent to $228.1 million (Figure 3).
Cumulative exports of table eggs from January to September this year were 61.9 million dozen, down 7.8 percent from the same period of last year, while export value reached $141.5 million, up 11.5 percent. Of the total shipments, 90.4 percent or 56.0 million dozen were shipped to the top six export markets, namely Canada, Bahamas, Netherlands Antilles, Mexico, Hong Kong, and Cayman Islands.
Table egg exports for September 2024 were 8.7 million dozen, an increase of 10.2 percent from the same month a year earlier, while export value reached $24.1 million, up 124 percent. September exports to Canada reached 6.7 million dozen, up 94.0 percent from the same month of last year, while exports to Mexico were 227,165 dozen, down 88.8 percent. While exports to Bahamas, Netherlands Antilles, Cayman Islands, Japan, Peru, and Bermuda increased notably, exports to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, EU-27, and Leeward-Windward Islands decreased significantly.
For egg products, exports in January-September 2024 totaled 19,359 metric tons, down 15.2 percent from the same period of last year, while export value was $86.7 million, down 11.9 percent. Exports to the top six markets including Japan, Mexico, EU-27, Canada, South Korea, and Australia accounted for 85.6 percent or $74.2 million.
September exports of egg products were 1,629 metric tons, up 3.5 percent from September 2023, while export value was $8.0 million, up 2.0 percent. Export sales to Japan were $2.8 million, up 7.3 percent year over year, while exports to Canada reached $1.8 million, up 32.3 percent.
